Should I choose IB or Cambridge in India for abroad studies after school

When it comes to choosing the right curriculum for your child, the first and foremost driving factor is whether the parents want the child to go for higher studies onboard or not. If the intention is not to have the child complete higher studies/graduation from abroad, then CBSE and ICSE are the most sought after curriculum to choose otherwise (if higher studies from abroad are in scheme of things) IB and Cambridge (IGCSE) are the two main curriculums to consider. We look at the obvious question from parents in this respect – IB or Cambridge in India for abroad studies later ?

Country for future studies

IB is quite well accepted in North and South America. It also has its footprints in African and some European and Asian countries.

Cambridge is more widely accepted in European countries.

Depending upon your target country for studies abroad, one of these can be chosen. For example, parents who plan to send their children to America/USA/States, usually prefer IB over Cambridge. On the other hand, parents with UK in mind, prefer Cambridge as the curriculum.

Age group

IB consists of 2 main programs called IB diploma and IB Career program at the age of 16 and 19.

Cambridge is an international qualification for children between age 14 and 16.

Focus of curriculum

IB focuses on promoting creativity and problem solving skills with internationalization in focus.

Cambridge is subject focused (children have wide options of subjects to choose from). It can also help prepare for IB diploma.

What’s more difficult

IB is considered more rigorous and hence a lot more exhaustive and difficult in comparison to Cambridge. IB has specific set of subjects, including a second language, and students must complete the Extended Essay (EE), Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) components.

Fees involved

IB schools are generally the costliest of all, given its strict compliance to teacher qualification, salaries and stringent staffing and infrastructure requirements and pre-conditions. For instance, in Gurgaon, average fees of IB schools start at 5 lakhs while for Cambridge, it averages around 2-2.5 lakhs.

As we see above, both provide valuable growth path for the kids and enables them for future studies in foreign countries. Based on the above key factors and the passion that the kid possesses, parents can select one of these curriculums for their child.
