Is movement to another board allowed in class 10th or class 12th
It is very rare that parents look for moving their child from one board to another in board exam classes i.e. in class 10th or 12th. There may however be circumstances where this may be necessitated. One where the child has recently transferred to a different city or another where there is a realization/belief that less competition driven learning in ICSE and Cambridge respectively. In such a situation, it becomes obvious to know if movement to another board is allowed in class 10th or class 12th or not. We find here more details and nitty gritty about the same.
CBSE and likewise ICSE also enrolls students usually by November every year. Students belonging to class 10th and 12th (and also 9th and 11th are pre-enrolled during this time) are covered during the enrollment. Going by recent trends, this enrollment may take place between August to November every year. If the student wants to move to another board after the enrollment is done in previous or new board, then in usual circumstances, new boards will not accept the applications. There is a catch however – If the child has got recently transferred from one city to another, such a transfer from one board to another in class 10th or transfer from one board to another in class 12th may be accepted. Same goes for a class 10th or 12th student before enrollment (April to July period). Comparatively though, getting transfer to another board is much more difficult after board enrollments/registrations are complete.
Hence, there are only the below circumstances in which movement to another board is allowed in class 10th or class 12th (CBSE to ICSE, ICSE to CBSE, Cambridge to CBSE or other combinations) provided following conditions are met:
- Enrollment in the new board is not complete (generally its done between August to November) and you have a transfer proof (inter city or country)
- Enrollment is complete but student got transferred from one city to another and has a valid reason not to opt for the same/previous board (this is difficult but usually accepted for central/state government and Armed forces transfers)
To seek admission to a new board school, TC and migration certificate would be required. In case of transfer, proofs of the same may be sought. Approval from previous and new board may also be required.

My child’s school is not giving TC in class 10th and we are shifting to another city. What to do?
Am I allowed to shift to IB as well in 10th?
Thanks for this information. It’s very common for us being in bank industry to experience frequent transfers
Good info for parents
Thanks for sharing, this is good to know that government servants have it easier to shift
