Can i move to another board in class 9th or class 11th

It is very common for students in a certain board (Especially ICSE or Cambridge) to contemplate moving to CBSE during class 9th or 11th. The reason for this move to another board in class 9th or class 11th is mostly attributed to the more focus on English in ICSE and less competition driven learning in Cambridge respectively. In such a situation, it becomes obvious to know if such a transfer from one board to another in class 9th or class 11th is even possible and permitted by these boards or not. We find here more details and nitty gritty about the same.

CBSE and likewise ICSE also enrolls students usually by November every year. Students belonging to class 9th and 11th (along with 10th and 12th) are covered during the enrollment/registration. Hence, until the enrollment/registration of the student in class 9th or 11th, it is possible for a student to move to a different board. Going by recent trends, this enrollment may take place between August to November every year. If the student wants to move to another board after the enrollment is done in previous or new board, then in usual circumstances, new boards will not accept the applications. There is a catch however – If the child has got recently transferred from one city to another, such a transfer from one board to another in class 9th or transfer from one board to another in class 11th may be accepted.

Hence, there are 2 circumstances in which one can move to another board (CBSE to ICSE, ICSE to CBSE, Cambridge to CBSE or other combinations) in class 9th or 11th provided following conditions are met:

  1. Enrollment in the new board is not complete (generally its done between August to November)
  2. Student got transferred from one city to another and has a valid reason not to opt for the same/previous board

To seek admission to a new board school, TC and migration certificate would be required. In case of transfer, proofs of the same may be sought.

We will also discuss these possibilities for a student in class 10th or 12th in a different article. Meanwhile, you may be interested in comparing different boards to identify what’s best for you.
